How to Wear Black in Summer

The darkest shade in the book gets a bad rap for not being summer appropriate, but the trick to wearing black in the summer is all in the fabrics you choose.  Summer may be prime time for breaking out the brights, but if you’re not really a color loving kind of girl, that’s ok too.  Instead of succumbing to a style that’s so not “you,” take your black & white uniform or your favorite neutral colors and style them up with a little oomph for summer.

I wore this black cotton Philip Lim dress here, bound at the waist by corset lacing which you will be seeing a lot of this fall on blouses and dresses alike.  Along the bottom is white trapunto stitching drawing attention to the full, ruffled hem, which dips slightly longer in the back.  Lightweight and loose skirt (not clingy to the body) making this perfect for summer days.

I pulled the look together with my hair back in a bun and white statement earrings here, black Celine sunnies here and a basket bag here.

Another option to keep the monochrome look and dress it up a notch would be these slides with this or this purse.

Do you wear black in the summer or if you have some favorite black pieces I’d love to hear:)

A Gingham Kinda Girl

A picnic gingham dress, isn’t that such a nice name?  It has me thinking of green belts at the park, hot sunny days, watermelon, and checked blankets.

This off the shoulder gingham midi dress from Urban Outfitters has been a Summer go to of mine.

It’s a put on and go type- the easiest kind of dress!  Requiring no effort at all, throw it on after the pool or wear it to dinner, just give it a little shaping around the shoulders.

Wear it with sandals or white sneakers.

When the weather is as hot as ours has been nobody wants a fussy wardrobe, simple and effortless is key.

I’m sure you’ve noticed I’m loving this little boxed print.  It looks great in so many different colors like red and yellow and goes with all my wardrobe accessories.

This Summer’s basket bags look terrific with it and all denim loved gingham.

If you want to give the gingham trend a little try without full on, there are many shoes and bags in the print too.

This dress is one you’ll pull from your closet time and time again because of it’s easy nature.

Statement T’s

Top Opening Ceremony Bag Rag & Bone Jeans Rag & Bone Shoes Balenciaga (past season) Sunnies Acne Studios

T-shirts that say something are hot property right now.  A good one will have them staring at your chest, squinting trying to read.

Don’t fret if the popular designer T’s like Gucci are out of your budget.  There are some good eye catching alternatives out there.

Does It Have To Mean Anything?

The first thing I do when I see a statement T is make sure I understand what the slogan means!  No one wants to be caught with some dodgy phrase smeared across their chest.  Aside from that there are no rules, wear whatever you want.  It could be a logo of your favorite designer, I’m wearing one by Opening Ceremony , your dad’s favorite band (who doesn’t love a vintage rock T), a political statement (a la Maria Grazia Chiuri’s tees at Dior) or the mantra you live by.

Blush Crush

If you told me last year, I’d be wearing blush ruffles for a date night, I’d probably given you a funny look.  But that’s what fashion’s all about, it pushes us to try new things season after season.  Never say never and your bound to enjoy yourself more when it comes to your wardrobe.  This ultra feminine off the shoulder top and skirt from NYC designer Love Shack Fancy won me over for it’s shade and unfinished hem, giving it an edge.

I also love the skirt paired with a white T and sneakers for a perfect weekend look.

Slip Dress and Lace-ups

Sometimes simple is the best way.  I’m loving slip dresses and low fuss styles.

Minimal and chic, a slip dress is an  essential staple dress to add to your wardrobe.  The best part is that it can be easily layered and accessorized to create a host of different looks.  In other words one slip dress investment can equate to a heap of different outfits.

My dress shown is from All Saints ,bought last year but linked is the SS2017 version very similar.  I love the lace detail along the bottom which is actually attached to the real slip that is beneath the ‘T-shirt’ already giving you two options on how to wear this.  On cooler days or for school runs I’d pair this with a white sneaker, however our weather has been so hot I like putting a sandal with it and keeping it all black…simple!  I’m wearing a Loeffler Randall and linked is the pom version but he makes many variations of this and it’s currently on sale.  The pic nic basket purse has been one of my favorite accessories this summer and have managed to pair it with almost everything, it really is more versatile than I expected.  Available here

Lastly, keep it casual, chic and grounded.  Slip dresses should fall flatteringly, not reveal bumps you would rather not share.  Don’t try too hard, this is a look that begs to be relaxed and comfortable.

Crochet dress

One of my favorite materials for a summer dress is crochet.  I love the texture and detail it brings to the fabric.  I found this dress at Nordstrom by Joie and fell in love with it.  Crochet in an off white shade gives it a subtle classic 70’s vibe and compliments all skin tones.

The cinched tassel drawstring is so fun and flattering to the waistline and the detailing along the neckline elevates the piece to another level.  The length hits me mid thigh and I love the A line shape.  I finished off the look with a nude heel, although I would also wear the dress with these shoes.

Summer Bucket List

Ivy’s wearing//outfit Zara Sandals Me//outfit Zara hat Jcrew last season

I always have a summer bucket list in the back of my head this time of year.  Little family adventures that go beyond the daily’s of the day camps I plug in throughout my children’s summer.  This year I composed a little list and can be activities for those days when we all start to go a little crazy around the house.

  • A family bike ride since my son has learned to ride a 2 wheeler he’s really been wanting us to take him on the bike trail.  I think about getting us all out on bikes every Saturday morning when I’m running and see so many families out there.  I think we’re finally reaching the age where this is something that can be done, just need to get Ivy a tot seat.
  • Day trips to San Francisco I don’t need much of an excuse to pack the kids up a drive down to the city.  It’s something I do often as I absolutely love it there and when we have the unbearable hot days it always feels so refreshing to be in SF’s micro climate.  That being said I would love to take the kids to the MOMA, I haven’t been in years.
  • Hosting a sleep-over for Ava just about every girl in her class has had a friend spend the night.  My excuse is that Ivy, our 2 year old does not sleep through the night, which was true until about 4 months ago.  Now Ava will be turning 9 and we’ve agreed to let her have a friend or 2 over for a slumber party.  I’m sure I’ll be exhausted for days after but mom duties;)
  • Waterslide Park there’s a waterslide park we pass when we go to the mall and the kids are always asking to go.  I figure one of these summer days where we have nothing going on I’ll take my big kids.
  • Summer reading now this is my favorite and Ava has deadlines this year to turn in each book report via the internet.  I’m also making a pact with myself to continue working with Stevie for Kindergarten prep.
  • Evening pic nic when it cools off enough I’d love to pack dinner and take the kids to the park so they can run around, who knows I may just bring pizza!
  • Try new seasonal recipes I’ve been slacking in the cooking department this spring so I’m hoping that with the summer schedule I’ll have more time in the afternoon to prep dinner and maybe get my kids to try more summer vegetables.
  • Have friends over for a pool party enough said!
