Elin Horgan, Jewelry Designer

Today, I am happy to introduce to you Elin Horgan, mother of 2 , and former executive who launched her contemporary jewelry line four years ago.  Elin and I connected through IG last year and I am totally in love with her refined, modern creations…just like her!

Elin tells us about the genesis of her company, what inspires her, and the balance of family life.

How did you get the idea of designing jewelry?

I had a childhood ambition to be a jewelry designer, but my studies and career took me in a different direction and I ended up working in corporate fundraising for a large conservation charity.

When a friend and I took a jewelry making course one weekend I felt like a light had been switched on.  I’d ignored my creative side for too long and I had to do something about it.  I enrolled in an evening class then a two year part time course at a local college.  After having my first child I realized that I didn’t want to go back to my old job and it felt like the right time to make the move and start my own jewelry business.

What do you like most in this work?

I love the whole process from the initial ideas, research and concepts through to making the finished piece.  It’s so satisfying to see the design finally realized and nothing beats the buzz of someone else appreciating and wearing your work!

I also love working for myself and being my own boss.  I’m able to fit what I do around looking after my two kids (aged 2 and 5) and having that flexibility has been brilliant.

What do you find the most difficult in this activity?

It can get a bit lonely, particularly as I came to jewelry design as a second career and so don’t really have an extensive creative network at the moment.  I’ve found it invaluable connecting with people through social media or meeting face to face at shows etc and I’ve found that most people are incredibly supportive and willing to share their advice and experience.

Could you describe a typical work day?

It can be quite varied which for me is a real bonus.  For example, this week I’ve had a day out at a photoshoot for my new collection, spent some time finalizing my website ready for launch and have also worked on some newsletter content.  However, other weeks I might be making non-stop to fulfill shop and gallery orders, so there really is no ‘typical’ day.

What advice would you give someone who would like to start a business like yours?

I think a lot of research and planning is essential (I took a start up course run by a local business advice organization), but really there is no substitute for just going for it.  I’d suggest putting together a small coherent collection of work so that when you approach shops/galleries they can get a sense of your style and decide if you’re a good fit with their customers.  It’s scary because you’re putting yourself and your work out there, and you do need thick skin to deal with the knock backs (there will be plenty) but not everyone is going to like what you do and that’s ok!
