How to Wear Black in Summer

The darkest shade in the book gets a bad rap for not being summer appropriate, but the trick to wearing black in the summer is all in the fabrics you choose.  Summer may be prime time for breaking out the brights, but if you’re not really a color loving kind of girl, that’s ok too.  Instead of succumbing to a style that’s so not “you,” take your black & white uniform or your favorite neutral colors and style them up with a little oomph for summer.

I wore this black cotton Philip Lim dress here, bound at the waist by corset lacing which you will be seeing a lot of this fall on blouses and dresses alike.  Along the bottom is white trapunto stitching drawing attention to the full, ruffled hem, which dips slightly longer in the back.  Lightweight and loose skirt (not clingy to the body) making this perfect for summer days.

I pulled the look together with my hair back in a bun and white statement earrings here, black Celine sunnies here and a basket bag here.

Another option to keep the monochrome look and dress it up a notch would be these slides with this or this purse.

Do you wear black in the summer or if you have some favorite black pieces I’d love to hear:)

The New Summer Floral

Today’s look features on one my favorite Summer tops and perfect for 4th of July festivities.  This French red cherry blossom print halter from Rebecca Taylor had me at “hello”.

Gone are the usual soft tones you might expect from a floral blouse, instead Rebecca Taylor has replaced them with punchy bold colors.  A new, sleek vision for bohemianism, the shape true to size, is kept wearable with halter style ties atop the shoulders.  It goes with my entire basket collection which seems to be growing at a steady pace.  Paired with high waisted Frame jeans and a gold wedge but a simple white sneaker will do too.  Need something to cover up at night, add a black leather jacket on top.

Summer Bucket List

Ivy’s wearing//outfit Zara Sandals Me//outfit Zara hat Jcrew last season

I always have a summer bucket list in the back of my head this time of year.  Little family adventures that go beyond the daily’s of the day camps I plug in throughout my children’s summer.  This year I composed a little list and can be activities for those days when we all start to go a little crazy around the house.

  • A family bike ride since my son has learned to ride a 2 wheeler he’s really been wanting us to take him on the bike trail.  I think about getting us all out on bikes every Saturday morning when I’m running and see so many families out there.  I think we’re finally reaching the age where this is something that can be done, just need to get Ivy a tot seat.
  • Day trips to San Francisco I don’t need much of an excuse to pack the kids up a drive down to the city.  It’s something I do often as I absolutely love it there and when we have the unbearable hot days it always feels so refreshing to be in SF’s micro climate.  That being said I would love to take the kids to the MOMA, I haven’t been in years.
  • Hosting a sleep-over for Ava just about every girl in her class has had a friend spend the night.  My excuse is that Ivy, our 2 year old does not sleep through the night, which was true until about 4 months ago.  Now Ava will be turning 9 and we’ve agreed to let her have a friend or 2 over for a slumber party.  I’m sure I’ll be exhausted for days after but mom duties;)
  • Waterslide Park there’s a waterslide park we pass when we go to the mall and the kids are always asking to go.  I figure one of these summer days where we have nothing going on I’ll take my big kids.
  • Summer reading now this is my favorite and Ava has deadlines this year to turn in each book report via the internet.  I’m also making a pact with myself to continue working with Stevie for Kindergarten prep.
  • Evening pic nic when it cools off enough I’d love to pack dinner and take the kids to the park so they can run around, who knows I may just bring pizza!
  • Try new seasonal recipes I’ve been slacking in the cooking department this spring so I’m hoping that with the summer schedule I’ll have more time in the afternoon to prep dinner and maybe get my kids to try more summer vegetables.
  • Have friends over for a pool party enough said!

Weekend Links

We’ll be taking this weekend to relax since come Monday it’s the last week of school!  It’s going to be busy with graduations and end of the year parties before complete summer mode.  Below are 5 fun weekend links.

Thinking of making this dish for my next book club potluck, it’s cherry season after all.

In need of a one stop shop for all your pool needs?

I absolutely love this mini beach tote, although thinking it’s a better fit for my daughters.

Spring Make-up update

Last week I did a Spring/Summer update to my make-up.  I’m not one to wear make-up on a daily basis but I do love picking up a couple new colors seasonally.  I was aiming towards the look that so many of us are out to achieve- a finished/natural look.  In other words make-up without looking done up!

I went to MAC because they’re known for having such a variety of foundations being that the priority was a fresh dewey look for my face.  I started with the timecheck lotion under their moisture spf foundation which gave me the base I wanted.  I’d like to mention that my skin tone pulls pink so I went with the NW20 foundation that leans yellow to even out my skin tone.

For a light shimmer blush fairly precious is a great one.  Don’t let the pigment in the packaging scare you, it goes on light and easy. A natural flirt eye shadow which I also use on my eye lids with soft brown along the crease and any dark brown shadow in the corner of the eye.

I’m not one for bronzer, I think it always ends up looking like dirt on me so another option is to high light cheek bones with a natural flirt eye shadow.  To finish off the look I matched viva glam lipstick- one of their most popular colors.  However if you’re looking for a statement summer lip I do love candy yum yum.

                                                                                           the look

How about you?  Do you have any seasonal favorite make-up items?  I would love to hear.
